Trappist Monk at Abbey of Gethsemani
Abbey of Gethsemani Trappist Monks- New Haven, KY
Monks in Kentucky? Who knew? In 1848 monks from Melleray Abbey in France founded Gethsemani in the rolling hills of Kentucky near Bardstown. The monastery is situated on a working farm of 2,000 acres. The monks support themselves and the abbey through its store, offering handmade Trappist cheeses, fruitcake, and bourbon fudge (both onsite and by mail order). By the way, the hardest part about this adventure was being quiet. I’ve never whispered so much in my life.
